A whaler's life was never easy in the 18th or 19th centuries. Come learn the history behind this unique art form, painstakingly practiced by men on long, seafaring voyages. See examples of scrimshaw, images carved into the bones of whales and other arctic creatures, and then create your own version in the studio.

About the Lost Arts Series:

"Lost Arts" is a series of four programs in which families explore forgotten art forms  in the galleries and then make art inspired by them in the studio. This series has been developed by our Family Programs Interns and is co-lead by them and our expert teaching artists. Cost is $15 per person ($12 for members).  All Lost Arts programs are designed for children and adults to participate equally: adults must accompany their children to the programs. For ages 6+. See the online family programs calendar for other program dates. Purchase tickets to individual programs online, or purchase a package deal for all four programs over the phone. See "Special offer" below.
