Folios Inside Out: The Book Behind the Cover

Have you ever seen a 400-year-old book up close? Would you like to hold one? In this special, one-time program, kids ages 8 and up (along with their grownups) will spend an afternoon with Alan Balicki, Chief Conservator at the New-York Historical Society getting up close and personal with a 17th century Ben Jonson folio. Families will also be invited behind-the-scenes into the New-York Historical Society’s on-site conservation lab. In the lab, families will handle and examine a 400-year-old folio and see in-process treatments of authentic documents (folio construction, restoration of tears, treatment of brittle paper, washing of documents, resewing of books, and more). After the lab visit, families will create and sew their own basic folio to take home.
Child participants must be ages 8 and up.
